Coaches' Roundtable Series

" What serves us best now"

– open topic to be agreed at the meeting, embracing the essence of coaching in discussing with respect, listening without judgement, and showing empathy and care

August 20, 2019 (Tuesday)

Coaches’ Roundtable Series, Topic #4

If you’re an experienced coach, a new coach or a coach-in-training, you probably enjoy deep conversations. The Coaches’ Roundtable Series is an opportunity for all kinds of coaches to engage in deep group conversations about topics that we care about.  Through these kinds of conversations, we gain new insights, clarify our own thinking and generally equip ourselves to engage in deep, wise conversations with our clients as well. Here’s how it works:

Everyone sits in a circle and the facilitator asks the opening question. Each person in turn around the circle gets a chance to speak about the question. Anyone can pass but no one can go out of turn. As each participant adds their ideas and perspectives to the conversation, the whole group explores the topic from many different angles. The process is very stimulating as the conversation moves in ways that no one can predict. Everyone in the circle has a chance to express themselves and to engage in listening to a range of other opinions and views. The process continues around and around the circle until it feels complete.

In coaching we are not only concerned about our clients’ issues, but also their whole person, their context, as well as our coaching presence we bring that will best serve our clients. Therefore, in service of our clients, our fellow coaches, coaching as a profession and mindset, and our community, the topic for this roundtable will be open and to be agreed at the meeting in embracing the essence of coaching: discussing with respect, listening without judgement, and showing empathy and care.

Some Benefits of the Roundtable Process:

  • A chance to discuss in-depth some of the biggest issues we face as coaches
  • Very stimulating way to explore a complex topic with a personal touch
  • Equality of opportunity to speak: a non-hierarchical model
  • Coaching skills practice:
    • Listening practice
    • Impromptu speaking to influence
  • Community building through sharing views and providing mutual support
  • Networking …really getting to know the in-depth views of others around the room, and therefore to make valuable connections
  • Attractive and valuable for all experience levels of coaches
