Reconnecting With 初心 — The Power of Original Intent in Coaching

(by Rainbow Chow – ICF PCC)

In coaching, we often talk about goals, performance, and mindset, but beneath all of that lies something even more fundamental: 初心 (chūxīn) — our original intent.  It is the spark that first drew us to our work, the purpose that felt deeply true before expectations, pressures, and responsibilities layered over it.  初心 is not about nostalgia; it is about remembering the authentic motivation that anchors who we are and why we choose to serve, lead, or create.  When clients reconnect with their 初心, they often rediscover clarity, energy, and a renewed sense of direction.

Recently, I have been working with a senior executive from an NGO, and this concept became the turning point in her coaching journey.  Over time, the weight of operational demands had blurred her sense of purpose.  However, when we revisited her 初心 — her commitment to community impact, her belief in dignity for all, and her desire to lead with compassion – shifted.  She described it as “coming home” to herself. That reconnection didn’t just motivate her; it grounded her mindset, reshaped her attitude, and guided her actions with greater intention.

What was most powerful was how her 初心 transformed her relationship with challenges. Instead of seeing obstacles as burdens, she began to view them as part of the meaningful path she had chosen. Difficult conversations became opportunities to practice courage. Resource constraints became catalysts for creativity.  Moments of frustration became reminders of why her work matters.  By anchoring herself in her original intent, she embraced challenges not as threats but as invitations to learn and grow.

For us as coaches, 初心 is a reminder that transformation often begins not with adding something new, but with rediscovering what was always there.  When we help clients reconnect with their original intent, we are not just motivating them — we are helping them realign with their deepest source of purpose and resilience.
