Review of HKICC Coaching Book Club Meet on June 25 2026
Last week, a small group of coaches sat together with Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning.
What we did not expect was where the conversation would go.
We explored three scenes from the concentration camp – prisoners finding dignity in impossible conditions, a dying woman finding peace in a chestnut tree, a man whose hope collapsed when a single date passed.
And then the room took over.
Participants extended the ideas into their own lives — their coaching work, their relationships, the things they are holding too tightly. Nobody needed to be told where to go. The book did the work.
Ian shared with us that leading the session was not without its own doubts. There were moments during the conversation where he quietly questioned whether he was the right person to be holding the space.
By the end, he felt something inside. He realized he had contributed to others finding something personal — something they had not arrived with. And what surprised him most was that he had been able to hold the space for that discovery without directing where it went.
For coaches in our community who are sitting on the fence about leading a session like this — it is a place to explore your own creativity while giving others something meaningful from what you have read. You do not need to be an expert. You need to have read something that stayed with you.
For those considering attending — you may leave with an insight that changes an assumption, shifts your approach, or gives you a new way of looking at your profession, yourself, or life. And what makes a book club different from a workshop is this: what you take away can be completely different from the person sitting next to you. The same book, the same conversation — and yet everyone walks out with something that belongs only to them.
